Beautiful Anegada is a Caribbean vacationer's dream: more than 300 wrecks to dive to and explore, matched by silvery sand beaches and flocks (seriously, flocks) of flamingos. Anegada is also known as the "Drowned Island" because its highest point is just 28 feet above sea level. There are a handful of villas, hotels and privately run inns on Anegada, but most travelers choose to sail here for the day from Tortola. Hopefully you appreciate seclusion, because Anegada offers it in spades.
Anegada, or the “Drowned Island” is the only island made of coral reef in the British Virgin Islands. It is the least developed of the chain, with a very low population and very few buildings. Even bars and restaurants mainly exist as huts on the beach. Those attracted to this island find the deserted island feel to be most appealing and the fact that activities are sparse is a-okay with them.
Anegada is known for miles of white sand beaches and the 18-mile-long Horseshoe Reef, the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean, and the third largest on earth. The reef makes navigation to Anegada difficult. While charter boats freely sail among most of the other Virgin Islands, charter companies often forbid clients to sail to Anegada to avoid running aground on the reef.
The reef has claimed hundreds of shipwrecks, including the HMS Astrea (1808). As such, it was once an important scuba diving destination. In an effort to protect the reef, the BVI government has made anchoring on Horseshoe Reef illegal.
